Caterpillar Group children have typically been enrolled in our program for at least one year prior to moving into Caterpillar Group, although occasionally we have an opening in our classroom and a new child joins our group.
The children in Caterpillar Group are feeling comfortable in the preschool setting and have made connections with the center staff and their classroom peers. The children continue to develop their social and emotion skills by working together, negotiating and problem solving. They learn to ask for help when needed, take care of their own materials, and work on their self-help skills—putting on and taking off jackets, selecting materials from the shelves and putting them away, using the bathroom, washing hands, and serving themselves at the lunch and snack table. The children and teachers take walks through the neighborhood, visiting the fire station, library and post office all the while learning how to be safe outside of the preschool environment. On a daily basis the children are exposed to finger painting, easel painting, socializing, working together, group time, sand play, dramatic play, bike riding, running, balls, obstacle courses, science activities, sensory activities, stories, games, songs, music, block play, playdough, and much more… |
